Chaplaincy opportunities

St Deiniol's Chapel Image

St Deiniol's Library is looking for Chaplains who are ‘inclusive’ in nature and ecumenical in spirit. They become ‘temporary members of staff’ for at least one month but no longer than three months. They receive free dinner, bed and breakfast at the library in return for some minimal duties.

The Library is host to clergy and laity of both sexes and from many traditions. It was Gladstone’s intention that St Deiniol’s was to be an inclusive Christian community. We understand this to mean that all are welcome regardless of gender, race, class, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. The Chaplain would be expected to be at ease with this inclusive ethos.

The terms of our Trust require that we use Anglican liturgy but there is no requirement for the Chaplain to be Anglican. We have had Chaplains from many denominations: Lutherans, Moravians, Mennonites, Methodists, and Presbyterians…

The normal duties are as follows:

Chapel

To participate in Chapel Rota - usually leading Chapel Services two days per week. If the Warden or the other regular officiants are away, you will be asked to take additional weekday services.

Lock-up

The Chaplain will be expected to be on duty about four times a week. Duty starts at 5.00pm when you check with Reception about ‘late arrivals’. Just before 6.00pm, you set out evening drinks in the Common Room. Other duties include answering the phone from 5pm to 10pm, booking in any late arrivals and undertaking the security round of the building at 10pm.

Otherwise, all that is required is to be a benign presence in the Library, supporting the residential and reception staff when necessary. In return for these minimal duties, the Chaplain will be given dinner, bed and continental breakfast free of charge. We only ask you to pay for extras – lunch, tea and coffee, cakes and biscuits, cooked breakfast, wine etc.

Partners/Guests

If the Chaplain is accompanied by his/her partner, the cost of the partner’s lodging will be at the equivalent of our cheapest rate. In 2009, the rate is £30 per day / £200 per week - for dinner, bed and continental breakfast. Lunch, drinks and other extras have to be paid for and can be purchased from our Coffee Shop for an average of £5 - £6 per day.

In addition, the Trustees are happy to allow Chaplains to invite guests/children to stay and to use available rooms at the same cost of £30 per day or £200 per week for dinner, bed and continental breakfast on condition that there is space available and that the offer is not abused. Permission will be granted by the Warden or, in his absence, the Librarian.  All other meals, drinks and facilities for guests have to be paid for and are the responsibility of the Chaplain.
